Wanderburg Mortar Towers: Quest Targets & Counter Help

Separate the Mortar Towers enemy quest from the Top Mortar module, check the one-run requirement, and understand the Overtime reports.

Updated

Current completion route: unresolved. The available report does not show a successful 25-kill counter or a current-version target screenshot. Use the historical clues below to diagnose the objective, rather than committing to a long Overtime run on the assumption that it will complete.

For the Golden Dunes “kill 25 Mortar Towers in one run” quest, do not assume ordinary stationary mortar buildings are the target. In a September 8 discussion for EA 0.9.6 , a player reported no progress from those buildings. Two replies described finding the relevant enemies in Overtime, after the final boss. This is a versioned player report, not a guarantee that every current spawn follows the same schedule.

Top Mortar Module: Equipment for your own loadout; not the enemy kill objective.; Mortar Towers quest: Read the target and one-run requirement before counting kills.; Counter unchanged after a tower kill: Recheck the target; players reported the quest enemies in Overtime.

One reply describes the Overtime target as a castle-like tower with a large cannon set into its top. The author was uncertain about its movement, so tracks or legs should not be treated as a required identifier from that report.

How to check progress without chasing the wrong target

  1. Read the full objective before entering. The reported Golden Dunes task says “in one run.” Do not add kills from separate runs as if it were an “overall” objective.
  2. Compare a single kill with the counter. If it does not move, recheck the target before spending the run destroying more of the same structure.
  3. Consider the phase of the run. The cited sightings came from Overtime. If you are still before the final boss, the report does not give a reason to expect the same target yet.
  4. Separate access from completion. Reaching Overtime does not establish that 25 targets will appear, or that you can survive long enough to defeat them. The discussion is evidence of the problem, not a successful guaranteed farming route.

Why older Overtime advice needs a version check

Official hotfix 0.9.8 changed Desert Overtime, strengthened the Overtime Mortar and gave its projectiles faster, constant flight time. Later, 0.9.13 (September 19) slightly nerfed Bronze and Silver Mortars in Overtime, and 0.9.14 (September 21) adjusted Overtime enemy stun resistances. These balance changes do not confirm a fix to the 25-kill objective or a guaranteed spawn route. Check the dated hotfix summary before using older difficulty advice. The earlier 0.9.6 player thread therefore cannot establish current timing or difficulty. Leave room to react to incoming fire rather than following an old waiting-time claim as a fixed route.

If the correctly identified enemy still gives no progress, record the objective, map, installed version and counter change for a bug report. For another frequently confused target, see the Harvester identification guide. The build guide covers equipment decisions separately.
